In the past, rainforests functioned as the lungs of the earth, but due to deforestation and a large increase in CO2 emissions, this is no longer sufficient. Last year alone, a piece of rainforest the size of Belgian Flanders was cleared in Brazil. And that every year. This is of course not going well.
My proposed solution will be growing seaweed on a very large scale as a replacement for these disappearing rainforests. It will of course be clear that if trees have to be replaced by seaweed, it will be a lot of seaweed. And indeed, an area the size of Africa will be needed! This concerns about 12 percent of the open ocean. So the space is there! A very practical side of the matter is that the many vested interests on land are bypassed, because there are far fewer of them on the high ocean. An additional advantage is that seaweed will provide many young fish and other life with a good and rich breeding ground, so it is not a bad thing for nature at all!
